At the beginning of the 2016-17 school year, Central’s musical production team entered into the Tommy Awards program with the goal of gaining professional feedback, exposing the program to the rest of the local theater community, and giving students opportunities to compete against some of the state’s most talented high school students in theater. We are proud to announce that West Allis Central High School’s recent production of The Addams Family has earned 14 Tommy Award nominations!

The Tommy Award program was named for local Broadway star Tom Wopat and is designed to encourage, recognize, and honor excellence in high school musical theater. Educators and industry professionals review productions at more than 70 high schools in 23 counties and provide valuable feedback. School and student achievements are honored and featured in an awards show held at Overture Center in June, and two outstanding performers advance to The National High School Musical Theater Awards (NHSMTA) competition in New York City.

Central’s combined cast (with students from West Allis Nathan Hale High School and West-Milwaukee Intermediate School) fostered spirit, teamwork, and demonstrated true determination to theater excellence in their production of The Addams Family.

We want to publicly acknowledge this incredibly talented cast and share our pride in how these students bonded together to produce a high quality, entertaining show. Special recognition goes to the directors, Michael D. Omo and Jordan Pollard, the music leadership team of Zachary Beeksma, Sam Grabow, Andy Buck, and choreographer, Ceci Scallish.

Special thanks to school Superintendent, Dr. Marty Lexmond and West Allis Central High School Principal, Dr. Amy Van Dueren for their support and encouragement along the way. The district is proud to be a place that values the arts as a way for students to grow beyond the classroom.

The production involved significant support of volunteers, parents, school board members, staff, students and the community. It truly embodied a spirit of collaboration, teamwork, problem-solving, and pushing the boundaries of what students thought they could do. Throughout the preparation and rehearsals, students did not see themselves as “Bulldogs” or “Huskies,” but as a tight, cohesive unit that is now being recognized with 14 Tommy Awards for their talent and dedication!
